Now that the calves are born and starting to grow up, it is time for the rancher to put his signature brand on these calves to let the world know who they belong to.  Hard to believe, but just a couple of years ago we had a case of "rustling," or cattle-stealing, in San Miguel County, so the Old West is still alive!  In order to prevent this, a brand is burned onto the hide of the calves.  This is in preparation for moving them on up into the high country for summer pasture, as that is big country and easy for cattle to get lost in.  Therefore, the brand is placed on the babies, in order to show ownership.  Here are a few photos of me roping some calves and bringing them to the branding team!
